So you are ready to take the plunge and buy Coachella presale tickets? Unlike most festivals Coachella presale tickets go on sale almost immediately after that year’s festival completes. I know what you are thinking - Coachella literally just took all of my money in April and now in late May / early June I need to pay them again!? Unfortunately the answer to this question is yes. If you are planning to buy Coachella presale tickets this will be your complete guide with all the information you need to know.
If you are new to Coachella and the process of snagging tickets we've made a short video highlighting all the important info to get you going. It's a good overview before digging into the article, which has more detailed information.
Coachella presale is when Goldenvoice, the producers of Coachella, put a limited amount of tickets up for sale for the following years Coachella. I don’t know what percent of the tickets constitutes the presale, but it is a decent amount. Passes are not discounted at all during the presale, unlike most music festivals. Still, it is advantageous to buy presale for the payment plan.
In years past the presale for Coachella had occurred in late May. The last couple of years the presale has pushed further out into early to mid June. This is a couple of months after the previous year’s Coachella has taken place, so it is a quick turnaround. In 2016, for example, the presale for Coachella happened on June 8th, 2016. Preale for Coachella 2018 is on June 2nd, 2017. The table below shows the dates for the past few Coachella presales to give you an idea of when it usually happens.
|Coachella Year||Date of Coachella Presale|
|Coachella 2018||June 2nd, 2017|
|Coachella 2017||June 8th, 2016|
|Coachella 2016||June 4th, 2015|
|Coachella 2015||May 16th, 2014|
|Coachella 2014||May 24, 2013|
There are a few ways to find out about the Coachella presale. If you are active on social media I suggest you follow Coachella on Facebook, Twitter, and/or Instagram. Coachella will announce the official presale on there so you won't miss it. You can also register on Event Track, track Coachella, and we will email you any big Coachella news including presale announcements.
Typically Coachella will announce the presale and a couple days later it takes place. Usually it is announced on a Monday and the presale will take place on Wednesday. You have a day or two to prepare for the presale after the announcement. For Coachella 2018 the presale was announced on Wednesday, May 31st. The presale occurred two days after the announcement on June 2nd. This is typical - they announce, and a couple of days later it goes on sale.
Yes, and rather quickly, especially if you are trying to go to weekend one. In 2016 the presale began on 10 a.m. and by 3 p.m. the presale was over for both weekends. Weekend 1 usually sells out in about an hour and a half to two hours and weekend 2 will sell out in about 5 hours.
Coachella passes will be $429 during presale, the same price as the general sale in January. Coachella offers no discount if you purchase presale. Here's all the pricing info:
You can purchase all your passes during the presale including GA, VIP, car camping, tent camping, shuttle passes, etc. The payment plan will be applied to whatever is in your cart and split up your total costs across the multiple payments. I would try to decide now if you are camping or not, if you need a shuttle pass or not. Yes you can figure it out later, but it's easier if you decide now.
In my view there are several advantages to buying Coachella passes on presale, and it is how I get them every year. I have actually never waited until the sale in January to purchases passes. First, tickets are easier to get during presale. There are less people buying presale because the lineup isn’t out yet, it’s really far an advance, and they are broke from last years Coachella. This makes them easier to get than in the general sale.
Second, if you try to get presale Coachella tickets it gives you two shots at getting Coachella passes at face value. If you can’t get through and buy tickets you still have a chance during the general sale in January. If you don’t get tickets in January you are S.O.L and have to take to reseller markets like Stubhub.
The final advantage to buying during the presale is that you can take advantage of the payment plan. Coachella only offers the payment plan as an option for presale passes – this option is not available if you buy tickets in January. We have a full article on the Coachella Payment Plan that explains all the details if you are interested.
The major disadvantage of presale Coachella tickets is that the lineup isn’t announced yet, so you are buying a $400+ concert ticket when you don’t know who will be performing. For me, I know the lineup will have plenty of artists I want to see annually so this isn’t a concern for me. However, this is a big drawback for a lot of people. The other disadvantage is you need to commit to Coachella far in advance when you buy presale (10 months in advance to be exact). Of course you can usually sell your tickets for at least face value if not more if you can’t make it, but there is still some risk with that.
It’s pretty simple honestly. The payment plan option is only available if you buy during the Coachella presale. The payment plan breaks up the Coachella pass into 7 equal payments. As I mentioned before, the passes this past year went on sale on June 8th, and for this example let’s assume you bought the regular general admission passes for Coachella at $399. If you use the payment plan you would owe $57 on June 8th, the day of purchase. Then for the next six months you will be charged $57 on the 8th of each month as your Coachella payment. That is you will be charged $57 on July 8th, August 8th, September 8th, etc. The charge is automatic and you do not need to do anything after the initial purchase unless you lose the method of payment you used when selecting the payment plan. Your final payment will be in December, just before the lineup comes out.
#1 – Create a Coachella Account Ahead of Time
If you have a Coachella.com account setup beforehand it will allow your checkout to go through much faster as you can already have your payment and shipping information setup. Once you are allowed to buy tickets you only have 10 minutes to complete your purchase before your tickets are released. You can save some time by already having this account made and ready to go.
#2 – Be More Than Punctual
Tickets will go on sale at 10 a.m. PST. You need to be online on Coachella.com by 9:45 and refreshing your browser trying to enter the waiting room. In years past I have been able to get into the waiting room a few minutes early, which could make all the difference. The earlier you make it into the waiting room the better your chances. Basically once you are in the waiting room you wait to be randomly chosen to buy tickets. Last year weekend one presale tickets sold out in about 90 minutes so being even a few minutes late could cost you.
#3 – Have Multiple Browsers / Computers Online
Utilize a Safari, Mozilla Firefox, Chrome and Internet Explorer browser open and ready to go. I use all of these to enter the waiting room. I also use multiple devices such as a laptop and iPad – the more windows the better. It is important to NOT REFRESH your browser. This could reset your place in line. I know it can be stressful and you may ponder if the waiting room is working but I assure you it is fine and you are better off by not refreshing or closing your browser.
#4 – Know What Tickets You Want Beforehand
Weekend one? Weekend two? Weekend two with shuttle pass? Know which tickets you are going for before you get to purchase tickets. Again, you only have 10 minutes to purchase tickets once you get the chance, don’t use this time trying to figure out what to buy.
#4b – Have A Rough Idea on Accommodations Beforehand
You can’t really judge fully which ticket you want to get until you know where you are staying. For example, if you stay in Palm Springs, CA you definitely want to buy the shuttle pass as well. So it’s good to know where you want to stay before you buy your Coachella tickets. This isn’t always possible but if you can it is helpful. Shuttle passes will sell out eventually so don't wait too long to decide.
#5 – Friends Can Help You Out
They only allow a couple of tickets per credit card but if your friends get through and buy their tickets they can re-enter the waiting room and buy you tickets with a different credit card if they get through. It may seem unlikely to you that someone could get in, buy their tickets, re-enter the waiting room and get through again before you get to buy tickets for yourself but I assure you this regularly happens. My fiancée has gotten through several times before I got through once in years past. The more people you have trying to get tickets the better your chances.
As I said I am a big fan of just buying the presale. The payment plan option is really nice for making you mentally not think Coachella is as expensive as it is. It also gives you a second chance to get tickets in January if you can’t get through. Honestly though you should be able to get through for presale tickets no problem if you follow the above advice. Most important is to be punctual! Weekend one can be a little harder but you should have no problems getting tickets for weekend two. Best of luck on your ticket quest and see you at the Polo fields in April!
